SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
May 18, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.
MINUTES:
Minutes were accepted as printed on a motion by Throwe/Asplund.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Kent Carlson
- Budget will be expended fully. Picnic in Park Bounce Houses cost rose, as did advertising, from previous year.
- 2016: Sponsor[s] needed for Face Painting artist
- Reclamation of at least a portion of cemetery flags desired
- Memorial Day Parade/Ceremony ad to be placed in papers

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
- All winners notified for both Memorial Day Parade and June 1st Town Council recognition (arrival, 6:30 PM; recognition at 7 PM meeting start).
- Gift cards from Barnes & Noble to be purchased; certificates being prepared.
- Six cars available to carry winners in parade, including two extra for veterans.
Evening in the Park: Kent Carlson
- Evening went well. Third Bounce House aided in lines being manageable; massages by Gary Tyler well received, as was face painting (see Treasurer’s report) and balloon maker.
- Two walkie-talkies non-functioning.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Kent Carlson (for Len Glasser)
- Bob Hornish will pick up wreaths and wreath hangers for the ceremony, and Bob and Herb will set up flag holders on Sunday.
- Patriotic coins to be presented to guest speaker, soloist, bugler[s], as well as to Chris, who has provided cars for the Commission’s use in parades.
- Order of march to be sent out electronically to all members.
- Park/Rec Dept. will prepare VMP for ceremony (ground work (landscaping), chairs. Sound system.
- Sean Reed’s Eagle Scout Project (5K Freedom Run): Proceeds to be presented during Memorial Day ceremony.
- Names read at ceremony are of those who have died in action.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony: Peter Anthony
- Steady donations; bins cleared regularly.
Veterans Day Parade: Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)
Veterans Day Ceremony: Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)
Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr. (completed; no report needed at this time)
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk (completed; no report needed at this time)
Wall Behind the Monument: Art Sladyk
- More forms to be printed; Chamber of Commerce sending information/flyers to all members.
- Pop up and information at Evening in Park well received; some donations.
- Everything is “a go” once sufficient monies received.
- NE Silica will pick up granite and bring to site; granite will take 4-6 weeks to prepare. Actual construction will begin after Labor Day.
- Pleasant Valley Landscaping (Tom Lovett) will provide/build paver wall behind new wall so that no grass mowing is needed.
- Site planes were done by Peter DeMaillie; all permits should be in place with SW Engineering Dept. when needed.
- Nearly all, if not all, materials and labor will be donated.
- Once completed, Bronze plaques need to be ordered.
- Kent, Peter, Art to speak at Rotary Golf Tournament on May 20 when donation received.
- Mitchell Fuel has donated $1000 toward the project.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund (no report needed at this time)
OLD BUSINESS:
- Herb still following up on disposal of American flags picked up by the Wapping Cemetery Association. Main Street Cemetery Association allows the Patriotic Commission to retrieve flags by a specific date. We would like that privilege extended to us at Wapping Cemetery also.
- Flag holder information (purchase through American Legion) will be on web site.

- Four bricks placed on May 20.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
- Sean Reed’s Freedom Run complimented.
The next meeting will be held Monday, June 15, 2015, at 7:30 PM.
